Often asked is, “Who would ever retire to Mexico?” – in particular to Ajijic, Lake Chapala, or Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco. There are probably as many answers as there are retirees living in homes in Ajijic. After one becomes acquainted with a number of Lake Chapala area expatriates (mostly Americans and Canadians), several characteristics become apparent: self reliance, a love of adventure, and sociability – to name just a few.
Many are at Lake Chapala because of the amenable Mexican culture, the alternate lifestyle, relatively low cost of living and, of course, the wonderful weather. A combination of all of these — and more — are manifest in the expatriate. And these days everyone gets to enjoy the best of the new and the old at Lake Chapala; gone are most of the primitive and/or annoying conditions of past decades and we now have the option to enjoy just about any modern convenience. Construction of new homes is ongoing, and many older homes are being rehabbed and modernized.
Another common query from non-residents is “What do you spend your time doing all day during your retirement there lakeside in Ajijic?” A common answer is “I can’t tell you exactly except that I find I don’t have much free time!” The list of activities is astounding when you consider we have only a few thousand expatriates at Lake Chapala.
